High into the chaparral-covered hills of Malibu, along the winding curves of Mulholland Highway, we found our piece of “major earth”. It’s a little over five and a half acres out in what must be the last part of the wild west in LA County.

Our original idea was to do a modern prefab house like the Marmol-Radziner or the Michelle Kaufmann prefabs we saw in Dwell Magazine. However, after doing all the research we needed to do to get through escrow we realized that all land is not created equal. Due to entities like the California Coastal Commission…it wasn’t going to be as easy as we thought to just put up a prefab. After a little more thought and a stroke of luck we met Steve Yett and wound up on the journey we are now on to build the Burns residence.

It’s an interesting mix of people out here…from those who uprooted out of city life long ago in search of a quieter way of life to the weekend warriors on their Harleys and hikers looking to commune with nature…living out here will surely be much different than living where we are now in the heart LA. It’s definitely a ways to the store if you run out of milk!

Just down the road there are a few major vineyards: Rosenthal – The Malibu Estate, the Semler Malibu Estate and the Malibu Vineyard. Some even believe that the area is turning into a mini Napa Valley…the Malibu Wine Trail? Perhaps someday!
